Approaching autonomous sustainable living

Approaching autonomous sustainable living
The essential vision of the future. By Cemen Polomanyi
How can we live sustainably, happily, in abundance and without harming nature? Our goal is to find out and we are half way there. We are the NGO 001.

With background in IT (ex-Googler), software and hardware engineering and some visual arts, like photo, movies, VJ, media installations (I should also mention I participated in Burning Man 3 times with various art projects), in 2021 I shifted to become obsessed with sustainability. I look at it as engineer, as the most efficient way of evolution of us humans while being stewards of nature instead of conquering it. I believe this approach will also stop wars eventually, as root cause of many of them is fossil resources, like oil and gas, and thus when we no more need them, what is the reason to fight?

After years of research I came up with the model, that I keep developing. The model of how we can live in a completely re-thought way, when our houses can act like trees - collecting sun, rain and wind for sustainable growth, and when it's time - to become a compost, a fuel for other species to thrive. And the House 001 in Western Ukraine is the first prototype of this idea. It is my office now and love being there, in its healthy and comfortable environment. It is also now an Airbnb, so many people have a chance to experience it.

And I feel the real journey is just about to start - when more and more people and organisations get to know House 001 and my model and new projects start to grow out of that. It's already happening with InnovateUK grant, when we want to build pretty much a next gen version of House 001 and devote it to IDPs and others affected by the war. Then, NEB Facility opportunity with even bigger impact.

Bringing this idea to life became my lifestyle and my mission in life. I can't imagine myself doing anything else. I want to build cities and villages based on this approach and basically create a better future for humanity. Because how/where we live is crucial to ho we are. And I believe creating environments for people to live in is the greatest art and greatest self-realisation that one can dream about.

What Concepts We’re Working On
Our project combines natural building with modern technology. While natural methods are sustainable, they’re often time-consuming and inefficient for heating. We merge natural materials with tech: heat pumps (we built a DIY version), Li-ion batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, Smart Home systems, air quality sensors, geo-screws, standing seam roofs, water recycling, recuperators, EV charging, and prefab housing.

Energy Independence is key—especially in Ukraine. We believe in decentralized micro-grids powered by solar and wind. House 001 is the core of such a grid, connecting to neighboring homes and sharing energy.

Water Autonomy is just as vital. We collect rainwater and aim to scale it—possibly via a pool—to avoid destructive drilling and achieve full independence.

Non-Intervention into Nature is central. Buildings shouldn’t consume or pollute nature. Instead, they can regenerate ecosystems using permaculture and biodiversity-enhancing practices. A house should function like a tree—gathering sun, wind, and rain, sequestering CO₂, and returning nutrients at the end of life.

Mixed Use: A house should adapt—hosting living, work, study, retreats, or food growing via green roofs and community functions.

Achievements (House 001)
Off-grid electric tiny house
Built from natural materials, no cement
Pillar-based “levitating” design with minimal land impact
9 months of energy autonomy, partial water autonomy, composting waste
Healthy indoor environment monitored by sensors
Goal: $1000/m² for affordability and inclusiveness
Liveable since late 2023; collecting performance data. Airbnb started in 2025

Next (Stage 2)
Full energy autonomy: better insulation + wind turbine
Full water+food autonomy: pond + aquaponics + greenhouse
Fossil-free sauna
New build may use I-beam panels and 2m elevation to maximize land use

Our goal: a replicable, self-sufficient, nature-positive living model for the future.
