On Decarbonisation

Florence Twu
Barber/Twu is the establishing work-in-progress of Daniel A Barber and Florence Tzu-Rong Twu.
This proposal presents a collection of projects utilising architecture & design to harness the material & immaterial potentials of carbon as an agent of climate change.
1. BUILDING LACE — The development of a modular, carbon-capturing facade ornament system made from an embodied carbon-fixing material that can be retrofitted onto existing building surfaces.
2. BIOLUMINESCENT BLOOM — A interactive immersive installation made with TouchDesigner incorporating a haptic remote object. The work intends to engage climate change at the planetary scale of the world's collective oceans via ‘visual transport’ between various locations exhibiting increased bioluminescent phytoplankton ‘blooms’ due to warming waters whilst facilitating a wondrous connective element allowing viewers to experience a night swim through the glowing seaborne phenomena.
3. BECOMING SOLID —
‘EMERGING FIGURE’ responds to the legacy of Georg Kolbe’s bronze “Alba/Der Morgen” (Dawn) sculpture in Mies van der Rohe’s celebrated 1929 Barcelona Pavilion, retraining attention upon the centrality of the human figure as the form of measure and experience in Anthropocene architectural space, in hopes of enabling a more reflective transition to other-than-human and thus ‘posthuman’ civilisational futures. The installation would consist of 1:1 scale recreated 3D printed figures of statuary such as Edvard Eriksen’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ and a photogrammetric translation of the goddess Venus as depicted in Botticelli’s painting “The Birth of Venus.”
‘GROWTH STRUCTURES’ produces 3D printed structures facilitating the growth of planetary ‘Blue’ and ‘Green’ carbon sequestering forms of coral reefs and rapid-growth plant matter such as vining kudzu, kelp & bamboo.
4. THE DECARBONISATION VEIL — A mobile canopy structure or huppah to be installed as part of a wedding ceremony in the Jewish tradition made of white carbon-capturing industrial textile.
