Periple Duet II _ Between Exhaustion and Cure

PROGRAMME

In this second iteration of the Periple Duet programme, the Lisbon Triennale continues committed to challenging established models by enabling an on-the-move residency, where LINA Fellows selected through the LINA platform open call are invited to prepare an essay, a podcast, any form of shareable deliverable, to be thought and produced during their journey to or through the Lisbon Triennale headquarters. Border crossing, territorial diversity, breaking the distance and stretching limits are key elements to be addressed in the travelogue. This brief, repeated in the course of the 3-year LINA program, gathers a diverse collection of emerging views of the European geopolitical contemporary context.

This second round of moving residencies is held in collaboration with a LINA member, the Association of Architects of Istria (DAI-SAI). With this institution involvement the format introduces a new variable, connecting not only the cities where the Fellows live with Lisbon but also with the abandoned Children's Health Resort in Krvavica and the Architecture of Cure public events programme.

The collaboration with DAI-SAI aimed to connect existing knowledge about the Children's Health Resort in Krvavica with on-site experimental practices as a pré-summer school, including "performative installations" and "daily performances", bringing that experience into to the Periple Duet residency, hence, enriching the deliverables matter.

PROJECT

In this second edition of Periple Duet, the Lisbon Triennale convenes the LINA Fellows to, from April to May 2024, create and undergo a thematic itinerary that unites the city where they live with Krvavica and Lisbon. To propose an approach to the briefing based on their previous research. The journey is to provide the raw material for an exercise in observation: crossing borders, experiencing territorial diversity, reducing distances, and expanding boundaries are key elements addressed in a travel journal as an essential tool for continuing education in architecture. An exchange responding to the mission of a shared plural, free, and open space.

On their journey, Fellows could only use collective and terrestrial transport systems, although there could be exceptional water connections. The itinerary connecting the city where they live, Lisbon and Krvavica could be direct but it was also allowed for them to define a larger, looser thread route considering the chosen concept.

The outcomes: Participate in a performative workshop in the DAI-SAI community festival based on this residency as the public event associated. Produce a combined essay — written, aural, visual — to integrate the Periple Duet collection. Seeking always to produce accessible, relaxed, and engaging storytelling, the essay could be a single piece or a series of smaller episodes.

Johanna, Tatuli and Giga's journeys are told on the Lisbon Triennale website in the form of written and visual essays/travelogues, each with its unique approach. Johanna enriches her contribution with a selection of interviews recorded during this residency.

Johanna Musch Periple: On Time

Johanna started her journey on the 20th April in Paris, France, passing in Lisbon from 23 to 25 April and ending in Krvavica for the Architecture of Cure programme from 29 April to 2 May.

Connecting 8 major cities from 5 countries, on her more than 6200 km Periple she aimed to explore through a speculative design experience the regeneration and maintenance of a 'climate of care' as both cure and antidote with long-term approaches. Participation in a 'time desk' (a legal entity dedicated to long-term urban planning) creates emerging scenarios and strategies supported by testimonies of care, a series of interviews recordings conducted during the trip.

Tatuli Japoshvili and Giga Tsikarishvili Periple: Between Exhaustion and Cure

Tatuli and Giga started their journey on the 21st April in Tbilisi, Georgia, passing in Krvavica for the Architecture of Cure programme from 27 April to 3 May and ending in Lisbon from 8 to 12 May.

On their challenging on-land journey spanning approximately 7100 km, traversing the expanse between the eastern and western extremities of trans-European territory by crossing the borders of 10 countries, they aimed to explore the causes of exhaustion and the paths to healing. They interweave subjective experiences into broader socio-political, mental and environmental ecologies. Travelling within and beyond the borders separating Tbilisi from Lisbon (with a stop in Krvavica), the artists reflect on the interplays between human-made articulations and surrounding natural landscapes. Experiences, affects, and imaginaries are conveyed through the lens of speculative fabulations.
