Bioregional Design Practice _ Biotektology

1 Dec 2024 — 1 Jul 2025

Arles
Organised by: Atelier LUMA

This year's LINA activities are scheduled to take place between January and June 2025. We have selected four main LINA Fellows to participate in the Research Residencies: Kuidas Works, Adam Przywara, Sonder, and Rubble. Each fellow was chosen for their unique perspectives on sustainable practices, particularly in relation to Atelier LUMA's bioregional approach to architecture and design.

Each Fellow follows a similar work plan structured around three phases: investigate & research, connect & design, and implementation. These phases shape the focus of their visits and on-site work in Arles, France. All Fellow activities will be completed by the end of June 2025.

This year, we have introduced two additional components to the LINA programme. First, we have invited former LINA Fellow Jakob Travnik to act as co-editor for a publication summarizing the past three years of LINA x LUMA activities. Second, we are organizing a LINA conference on 27 June 2025, which will include a review of past activities, a preview of the publication's first draft, and presentations of work developed as part of our Year 3 programme.

Sonder - Biotektology

This research explores the intersection of early 20th-century philosophies—Tektology, Cosmism, and Godbuilders—and ecological principles observed in the Camargue bioregion. Through site-specific artistic research, it seeks to reinterpret symbiotic relationships in nature as speculative models for human collective organization. The goal is to challenge dominant approaches to resource management, social fragmentation, and human-environment interactions.

The project is structured around five key objectives: identifying local bioregional systems, mapping and documenting collaborative ecological mechanisms, investigating forgotten philosophical frameworks, developing artistic tools for inquiry, and producing discursive and physical outputs. Through microscopic ecological observations and philosophical reinterpretation, the project aims to develop a methodology called "biotektology"—a hybrid of ecological science and speculative social design.

Conducted in three phases from January to June, the work includes on-site investigations, performative field research, and the creation of interactive public outputs. Activities include literature reviews, meetings with experts, field observations, and experimental interventions. Outcomes will be shared via an exhibition, publication (within the LINA 2023–25 framework), and participatory events.
