Revealing & Revaluing
We - Carolina & Linea - met while studying architecture at Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark. We connected over a shared curiosity for the ecological dimensions of architecture and the desire to challenge the responsiveness of our field.
We understand the architect as a mediator, able to negotiate material interventions on behalf of more-than-human actors & advocate for relational approaches. Our work reflects an interest in ecosystemic thinking and material cycles & spans across product
design, material investigations, critical research & exhibition.
Our shared interests became the basis of our studio and our collective master thesis. Our projects have allowed us to work across disciplines and understand how our practice carries a great potential of connecting fields through initiating collaborations.
This fall, some of our work is being exhibited around Denmark as a part of the “New Ground” Initiative; a travelling exhibition exploring the future of architecture and landscapes that drive a green transition.
We currently find ourselves in climatic distress and ecological uncertainty; the earth moves beneath our feet as, in the words of Bruno Latour, it is “no longer the stable background against which human history unfolds” but “an active agent that participates in the events we are trying to describe.” - The ground can no longer be understood as neutral or passive, and this shift fundamentally reframes the role of the architect.
Revealing & Revaluing is an ongoing artistic research project addressing our evolving material reality. Through multiscalar and multitemporal drawings, it re-represents more-than-human actors, exploring their agency and positioning them as participants in negotiating—and potentially shaping—material interventions.
The entry of the research deals with a series of vacant buildings. In their transformation we engage with climatic, biological, and material actors.
New ecological layers - soil, water, energy, and aliveness - become criteria for assessing what is valuable to protect and enhance.
Representation becomes a form of knowledge and value creation, revealing and revaluing more-than-human actors previously excluded from architectural representation, redirecting attention and challenging conventional approaches to transformation.
This broader ecological perspective raises questions such as: What is the geo-historical value of soil? What is the fluctuating culture of water bodies? How do we trace the biography of a material? How do we understand the agency of living things beyond our comprehension?
Our method challenges how we understand more-than-human actors as equal participants. We propose the architect as a mediator, reconsidering the order of stories, the scales through which subjects are understood, and the temporalities that become visible.
Moving forward, Revealing & Revaluing will unfold its methodology in exhibition. The project seeks to foster a dialogues & encourage ongoing engagement with ecological agents and landscapes.
