LA ESCUELA___ Collective Learning in Public Spaces
Miguel Braceli is an interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of art, architecture, and social practices. His work centers on participatory projects in public space that engage geopolitical and local conflicts through large-scale, site-responsive interventions across Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States.
Braceli has presented performances, exhibitions, and educational projects with institutions including MoMA PS1, Documenta Fifteen, The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Hemispheric Institute NY with MUAC‑UNAM, Matadero Madrid, Museo Moderno de Buenos Aires, Athr Foundation, Untitled Art Fair, and Pace Gallery. His projects and critical writing have been featured in e‑flux Criticism, Forbes, and ArtReview.
He has participated in residencies and programs such as MacDowell (2023), Fountainhead (2023), Skowhegan (2022), Art Omi (2021), and McColl Center (2020), and held fellowships including AIM Bronx Museum (2022), Fine Arts Work Center (2024), and Monument Lab (2026). Recent recognitions include a Fulbright Scholarship (2019–2020), the Young Artist Award from the Principality of Asturias (2018), and the Tulsa Artist Fellowship (2024–2026). In 2021 he co‑founded LA ESCUELA___ and in 2022 received a Percent for Art commission for a permanent public artwork in New York City.
We propose to expand LA ESCUELA___ into Europe as a translocal platform that networks European artists and cultural organisations with teaching-artists from Latin America and its diasporas. Founded in 2022 by Miguel Braceli and Siemens Stiftung, LA ESCUELA___ has grown as a network for spatial and community-based practices across Latin America and its diasporas, and more recently, via a nonprofit in New York. This projects aim to bring Latin American pedagogical legacies into dialogue with European spatial practices to co-produce methods and programs responsive to local urban ecologies.
LA ESCUELA___ treats the classroom as an expanded, mobile, relational laboratory: public-space interventions, community-led workshops, participatory installations, online salons, and residencies where artists act as teachers, researchers, and co-creators. Our methods foreground collective authorship, intergenerational exchange, community ontologies, and ethics of care.
We initiated LA ESCUELA___ to surface collaborative pedagogies often sidelined by formal institutions. Through context-specific listening and sustained partnerships we have produced open-access pedagogical resources, editorial outputs, and a living archive. Impacts include strengthened networks, enduring artist–community collaborations, and activated public spaces as sites of mutual learning and care.
Commons of Care will adapt our classroom methodologies with LINA Members via short residencies, site-responsive public interventions, hybrid workshops, and knowledge-exchange seminars. Research-led and iterative, projects will be co-designed with hosts to test adaptation across urban, cultural, and policy contexts. Expected outcomes: co-authored public programs, a Commons of Care methodolgies, documented and published case studies in LA ESCUELA___; reinforcing an intercultural network centered in collaboratorive spatial learning practices.
