The FFRU is a collective and a platform focused on rethinking the future of the planetary food system. It explores the food system's relationship with the built and natural environments, the role of technology and policy in future agri-food models, and how art, architecture, and culture contribute to its transformation.
Functioning as an Open Research Platform, the FFRU is composed of many members and agents with different levels of involvement. Its core consists of eight interdisciplinary researchers from various backgrounds: Eduardo Castillo-Vinuesa, Carlo Udina, Mireia Figueras Cortés, Marcia Belén Ardiles, Irene Domínguez Serrano, Pedro Sanguino, Claudia López García, Anastasia Sinitsyna.
This core is connected to a growing community of experts and institutions that support the unit's work and research. Among these experts are Uriel Fogué, Guillermo Fernández Abascal, Manijeh Verghese, Gilda Zazzara, Hannah Landecker, and Lavinia Maddaluno, and institutions such as TBA 21 Academy, the European Climate Foundation, and Medialab Matadero.
Currently, the FFRU is based in Venice, working within the context of the Foodscapes project, hosted by the Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, in collaboration with TBA21 and the European Climate Foundation.
At a time when energy issues are more relevant than ever, food remains in the background. Yet the way we produce, distribute, and consume food mobilizes our societies, shapes our metropolises, and transforms our geographies more radically than any other energy source.The FFRU looks at the potential impact of reshaping the food system as an architectural endeavor. In a world where the molecular is tectonic, and where every bite we take reverberates across the planet, now more than ever, we must redesign it with its ecosystemic implications in mind, aiming to create a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient future.
The FUTURE FOODSCAPES COMPENDIUM is an expanding archive of tools and resources aimed at forging a fairer and more resilient global food system. Its primary objective is to identify, categorize, and analyze a range of case studies—including businesses, start-ups, technologies, strategies, practices, and emerging dynamics—that, when properly scaled, have the potential to create a food system capable of feeding the world without depleting the planet. This compendium will be accessible through a public web platform, open to anyone interested.
The case studies will be organized around five distinct research agendas, each targeting one of the five integral layers of the agrologistic process: FOUNDATION, PRODUCTION, DISTRIBUTION, CONSUMPTION and DIGESTION.
#01/FOUNDATION: Investigates soil's role in agriculture and architecture to foster a sustainable food system
#02/PRODUCTION: Explores models of agriculture and livestock production, focusing on land use, exploitation, and sustainability
#03/DISTRIBUTION: Analyzes global food pathways, logistics, and environmental impacts, seeking strategies to improve food distribution
#04/CONSUMPTION: Examines the societal roles of food consumption locales, such as kitchens and restaurants, and explores transformative approaches
#05/DIGESTION: Concentrates on the lifecycle of food beyond consumption, exploring waste management for more resilient, sustainable practices
Additionally to the case studies, the compendium will gather a growing archive of references and bibliographic material provided by the growing network of experts associated with the FFRU.
By the end of 2023, we will produce a series of speculative audiovisual reports, showcasing the most promising case studies. Following that, the main goal of the FFRU will be to initiate an IMPLEMENTATION PHASE, where some of these case studies will be prototyped in real life, in collaboration with potential stakeholders and the institutions linked to the FFRU.
